He joined the German Army in 1914 and started the war serving in an Infantry regiment. After being severly wounded in 1915, he was transferred in the Air Force. He was granted the “Croix pour le merite”, the highest military decoration of the Prussian Empire.
During the first days of the Nazi regime, he was jailed for several days for refusing to give the Nazi salute on parade .
