I can concentrate in studying the biography of the artist, the history of the period, I can analyze the peculiarities of the form and the techne and I can do that well with all of the modern tools. I know that I can sustain these actions only about works of art that force me into a silent suspension, a lifting of myself out of the everyday experience.
The suspension has to do with the specific quality of a masterpiece.
As a beholder I can forget myself and my time as I recognize what the artist has expressed for me long time ago or in an another cultural frame.
I don’t know if this is what Hans G. Gadamer would define "comprehensive sharing of what is represented before one." Yet it is the impression of sharing the essence of someone’s work of art that still thrills me.
